Wireless vs fixed DR detectors: how to choose the right detector

By Tirath Shah, Sharp Imaging Solutions · Updated September 26, 2026

Choosing a digital radiography (DR) detector comes down to three questions: wireless or fixed, which size, and which performance level fits your workload and budget.

Wireless or fixed?

Wireless detectors run on a rechargeable battery and connect to the workstation over Wi-Fi. One detector can be used in the table bucky, the wall stand and for tabletop or cross-table exams, which makes it the most flexible choice for single-room upgrades, urgent care, orthopedic and chiropractic practices, and mobile X-ray.

Fixed (wired) detectors stay in one position, such as a dedicated wall stand or table, and connect by cable. There are no batteries to charge or swap, which suits high-volume rooms where the detector never needs to move. The Canon CXDI-420C Fixed is a 17 x 17 in fixed detector.

Wireless detectors used all day are usually supplied with two batteries and a battery charger, so one battery charges while the other is in use.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 17 x 17 detector better than a 14 x 17?

Not always. A 17 x 17 detector covers a larger area without rotating, which helps with chest imaging and large patients, but it is heavier and may not fit every bucky tray. Many rooms use a 14 x 17 detector for the table and a 17 x 17 for the wall stand.

How many images does a wireless detector take per battery charge?

It depends on the model and workflow. Canon specifications range from up to 1,000 images at a 7-second cycle for the CXDI-702C to more than 1,500 for the CXDI-Pro, measured under Canon test conditions.

Can Canon CXDI detectors be added to non-Canon X-ray rooms?

Yes. With the right generator interface, Canon CXDI detectors can upgrade X-ray rooms from GE, Siemens, Philips, Shimadzu and other manufacturers.
